Memphis Running History

In the fall of 1981, legendary Memphis runners Mike Cody, Jack Rockett, and Bill Craddock were out on a run in their hometown of Memphis when Mike suggested the group open a running store. Back then, running was a mostly male sport. Running clothes were all cotton, and running shoes were hard to come by in Memphis. The group recruited Frank White, John Nash, Mike Mclain and current owner Barry Roberson and Dick Clinton. Breakaway Athletics was born.

Today, the store has been renamed Breakaway Running, and after many homes – including Bartlett, Tennessee, and, briefly, Oxford, Mississippi – now has two locations, one in Germantown nest to the Wolf River trails and one in Overton Square in midtown Memphis. We welcome all sizes, shapes, genders, and experience levels, from novice walkers to elite athletes.
