I first started running mainly because of my dad, Barry Roberson. As long as I can remember he was always running. He would take my sisters and me to run the trails around Memphis with him. I grew up hearing old Memphis running stories and stories about Breakaway. My father was the first employee and manager at Breakaway in 1981. My family now owns both Breakaway Running locations.
I did not race growing up, but just ran for the enjoyment of running and I especially love running trails. I continued running in high school to stay in shape for soccer. I played two years of college soccer and then ran my first race when I was 19. That race was the New York Marathon, and it was amazing. It was the runners, the crowds, the pain of running a marathon, and I was hooked. I qualified for Boston at New York, and I wanted to go further. I hung up the cleats then and started to focus on running. I started competing in ultra marathons and haven’t done much else since. This has taken me to some pretty incredible places over the years.
I feel very fortunate to go to work with some of my best friends everyday and help people with their running. We kind of work at a clubhouse for runners that also sells anything they may need. We get to share our love and knowledge of running with runners of all levels. One of the things i have enjoyed most with working at the store is the involvement in the running community. Whether it be group runs, classes, pub runs, water stops, clinics, or putting on races, we pretty much always have things going on.
