It all started in the fall of 1981 when legendary Memphis runners Mike Cody, Jack Rockett, and Bill Craddock went out for a run. Mike mentioned to the other men that they should open a running store together since there wasn’t a real athletic store in Memphis that was tailored to runners. At that time in the early 80s you couldn’t get your running shoes quickly enough. “You’d order a pair of running shoes and by the time they came in the season would be over with,” said Mike Cody.
This was only a fraction of the reasons why the men and a couple of others like Frank White, Billy Simpson, and current owner Barry Roberson, opened up Breakaway Running, which was formerly known as Breakaway Athletics. The name isn’t the only thing that has changed. In fact, running in general wasn’t the widespread phenomenon it is today. It primarily consisted of male runners and cotton apparel and fewer women, advanced running shoes, and technology.
Now, after many homes, including Bartlett, Tennessee and Oxford, Mississippi (briefly) we are proud to say that we have two Breakaway Running stores, one in the heart of Germantown, Tennessee and the other in the growing Overton Square in midtown Memphis, Tennessee.
